“If you love me, keep my commands.”
John 14:15
The words of Jesus could not be clearer: If you love me, keep my commands.
Not: If you love me, feel warm feelings about me. Not: If you love me, agree with me intellectually. Not: If you love me, attend church occasionally and call yourself a Christian.
Obedience. That is how love for Jesus is measured.
This is deeply countercultural in an age that prizes authenticity over authority, personal truth over revealed truth, and feelings over faithfulness. But Jesus did not leave room for a love that does not obey.
Throughout His ministry, Jesus connected love and obedience inseparably. He told parables about servants who were judged not by their beliefs but by their actions. He warned that many would call Him "Lord, Lord" but be turned away because they did not do the will of His Father.
Obedience is not legalism. Legalism is trying to earn salvation through rule-keeping. Obedience is the response of a saved heart that loves its Savior. We do not obey to be saved; we obey because we are saved.
But here is the uncomfortable truth: a faith that never produces obedience is not saving faith. It is mental assent. It is cultural Christianity. It is the wide road that leads to destruction.
Examine your life today. Where is your obedience lagging behind your profession? Where are you calling Jesus "Lord" but not submitting to His lordship? These are not questions to produce shame, but honesty. Because genuine love for Jesus will always show up in obedience to Jesus.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus, I want my love for You to be real—not just words, but obedience. Show me where I am resisting Your commands. Give me grace to submit, strength to follow, and joy in obeying. I want my life to match my lips. Amen.
